Executive Vice President, American Sustainable Business Council
Thomas Oppel joined the American Sustainable Business Council as executive vice president after more than three decades of in management, communications, policy and politics. A former middle school English teacher, Oppel moved from covering politics as a journalist to working on political campaigns, including serving as press secretary to the first African American elected to Congress from Mississippi since Reconstruction. After more than two decades as a successful media and strategic consultant, first as a partner in a DC-based firm and then as head of his own company, Oppel left politics to become chief of staff to the Secretary of the Navy during the Obama Administration. During his tenure, he helped manage the effort to meet the Secretary’s ambitious goals to reduce fossil fuel use in the Navy and Marine Corps ashore by more than 60% in just five years.
